Information about Counseling and Counselors

What is a Counselor?

Counselors, or Therapists, provide Mental Health Counseling services, to individuals from ages 3 years and up. Counselors are not Psychiatrists, and do not write prescriptions.

All of our Counselors are trained professionals, licensed in the State of Texas. Counselors practice both as generalists, and in areas of specialty, or specific expertise. For example, Licensed Social Workers (LMSW) and Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) may see adults, children, couples, and families. Licensed Marriage & Family Therapists (LMFT) have a specialty area in Couples and Family work, while Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors (LCDC) help clients work through issues of Addiction and Substance Abuse.  Also, individual counselors may be trained in several different modalities (e.g., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Play Therapy, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, etc.) Some counselors, depending upon their qualifications, may accept different types of insurance.

What is Counseling?

Counseling is a professional, ethically-bound, helping relationship. Counseling exists and functions purposefully: to assist the client work through life problems in a systematic and organized way, while providing scheduled emotional support during times of crisis. Counselors and therapists must keep their license up-to-date, and annually pursue Continuing Education, in order to keep their knowledge of professional ethics, legal issues, and counseling theory relevant to their practice.

What can I expect from Counseling?

Counseling appointments for adults generally last 55 minutes, except an initial Intake appointment, which may last longer. Children’s appointments are generally scheduled for 30 minutes, and parents may be included, or be asked to wait for a consultation towards the end of the session. If you have questions about whether counseling may be right for you, please feel free to call.

Don’t let financial concerns act as an obstacle to seeking help! West Texas Counseling & Guidance offers services on a needs-based, sliding scale, for those without insurance.
